EIT launches “The Innovation Exchange” to promote innovation in Malta

EIT’s Innovation Exchange initiative accelerates innovation in Malta, empowering the entrepreneurial ecosystem through workshops, national forums and cross-sectoral collaboration.

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has announced the launch of The Innovation Exchange, a platform dedicated to strengthening the Maltese entrepreneurial ecosystem. The initiative was created to support the development of an environment in which collaboration between business, research and institutions becomes the main engine of the country’s economic and social growth.

Malta, in recent years, has seen a steady growth in interest in technology, startups and the digital transition. However, there was still a lack of a structured point of reference capable of networking skills, ideas and investments. With The Innovation Exchange, EIT aims to fill this void, offering a space where local talent can connect with European opportunities.

The initiative involves the active participation of universities, companies, public bodies and non-governmental organisations, with the aim of stimulating concrete projects that meet the needs of the Maltese market and society.

Workshops and forums to develop innovation

The program is divided into a series of workshops that take place between September and October, each dedicated to strategic issues for the development of the country. The three areas of work identified are:

  1. knowledge-based economic growth;
  2. ecological and digital transition;
  3. social well-being and community cohesion.

Each working session brings together the experiences of experts and stakeholders from different sectors. The conclusions of the workshops will flow into a national forum, scheduled for November 2025, which will serve as a platform for discussion between the actors of the system and as a starting point for new initiatives.

The forum will also be an opportunity to outline policy and project proposals in line with the priorities of the Horizon Europe programme, of which EIT is an integral part.

The impact of innovation on the entrepreneurial ecosystem

At the heart of the project is the belief that Malta’s economic growth passes through innovation. The island has a young, flexible and open to change entrepreneurial fabric, but it needs a more integrated ecosystem to compete at European level.

According to Diana Miceli, Malta Community Officer for EIT, The Innovation Exchange represents a platform to enhance human capital and to attract investments in research and development. The goal is to create connections between startups, universities and established companies, so that the most promising ideas can evolve into sustainable and scalable projects.

 Innovation, in this context, does not only concern technology but also processes, training and corporate culture. The EIT aims to promote an open and collaborative approach, in which experimentation and knowledge sharing become part of the daily life of the Maltese production system.

Thanks to The Innovation Exchange, the island will be able to strengthen its presence in European networks and position itself as a bridge between the Mediterranean and the European Union in the field of sustainable innovation.

An evolving ecosystem

The launch of The Innovation Exchange is just the beginning of a broader journey. In the coming months, the EIT will work together with local partners to define long-term strategies that include training programmes, support for start-ups and access to European funds.

These activities will help create a more cohesive ecosystem, where public policies align with the needs of the private sector. The goal is to make Malta a laboratory of experimentation for economic models based on innovation, capable of generating economic and social value in a lasting way.

In the future, The Innovation Exchange will also be able to act as a reference platform for other Mediterranean companies interested in developing common strategies in the field of innovation and competitiveness.

With a pragmatic and inclusive approach, EIT demonstrates how international collaboration can translate into concrete results, turning innovation into a structural driver of growth.
